“In Memory of Chen Cheng Mei: As She Paints” presents the second chapter of MOCA Singapore’s retrospective dedicated to the pioneering late artist Chen Cheng Mei. The exhibition offers an intimate perspective on her six-decade practice, featuring over 80 oil paintings, etchings, and mixed-media works, many shown publicly for the first time.
Organized into four thematic sections, the exhibition moves beyond conventional Nanyang style narratives to reveal Chen’s distinctive artistic voice, one defined by optimism, freedom. It encourages a timely reconsideration of the legacy and contemporary relevance of twentieth-century Southeast Asian women artists.
**About the Artist
Chen Cheng Mei (陈城梅, 1927–2020), a pioneering second-generation Singaporean artist and a founding member of the Ten Men Art Group. A graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, she developed a diverse body of work spanning oil painting, printmaking, and calligraphy. Her extensive travels inspired a unique naïve style, marked by bold color and simplified forms, through which she contributed a fresh and personal interpretation of the Nanyang art movement.
