Tagore Society Singapore, Wandersoul Escapades and Open Stage present a special evening celebrating the life and work of Manoj Mitra, one of the most respected figures in Indian theatre.
The Bengali community in Singapore shares a deep connection with Manoj Mitra’s work. Over the years, many of his famous plays—Norok Gulzar, Rajdarshan, Kenaram Bencharam, Sandhya Tara, Dompoti, Punti Ramayan, Marich Samvad—have been brought to life on stage here.
This tribute evening begins with an audio-visual presentation about Manoj Mitra’s life and legacy. It will be followed by a performance of one of his most powerful plays, Mahabidya (The Great Art).
Set in a fictional kingdom, Mahabidya is a sharp and witty satire that explores how greed and corruption affect every level of society. The story follows an ensemble of characters—a constable, a cleaner, a jeweller and his wife, the police commissioner, a minister, and the king—each representing different layers of power. As we move from one character to the next, we see how the scale of wrongdoing grows with their authority. The constable steals small things, while the king manipulates the entire system for his benefit. Through its humour, the play holds up a mirror to society, showing how, in the end, it is the common man who bears the brunt of it all.
Directed by Indranil Banerjee and produced by Tagore Society Singapore, the play will be performed in Bengali.
Join us in honouring the legacy of Manoj Mitra and celebrating his timeless contribution to Indian theatre.
