Sinopsis

Red Dot Baroque's beloved tradition of Yuletide concerts is back this year, under the leadership of Artistic Director Alan Choo. Featuring music from England, Ireland and Scotland, this concert explores just how thin the walls between Baroque music and folk music are. Composed dances by Henry Purcell and Francesco Geminiani often have a strong folk influence, sometimes even quoting popular tunes of the day. The blind harper Turlough O'Carolan composed Irish tunes and performed them across the country, becoming Ireland's national composer. Traditional tunes such as the Wexford Carol and the Skye Boat Song are timeless, enduring from well before the Baroque period to present day. Bagpipes and Irish tin whistles join the lineup of Baroque period instruments in this crossover programme, performed in an intimate setting in The Arts House Chamber, in itself an architectural legacy of colonial Singapore. Audience members are invited to join their voices in a sing-a-long segment of English carols at the end of the programme, realizing the spirit of Christmas as a community.
