Lines and grids permeate Victoria Chang’s latest poetry collection, With My Back to the World, just as they feature in the artworks of abstract American painter Agnes Martin (1912–2004) that inspired the book. In this reading and talk, Victoria shares how immersion in visual culture can lead to the creation of poems with new meanings, and how the processing of geometric and abstract shapes can help make sense of the grief we endure in life.
