PRISM 48 - WHY MAKE FESTIVALS?

An arts festival is always an act of storytelling. It can present a vision of a community, a narrative of a nation, an angle on the world — or all of the above. In a post-pandemic landscape where many different storytelling industries are facing seismic changes, what stories should arts festivals tell today that will command attention and strike a chord?  

SIFA began as a platform for amateur local performing arts groups, and evolved into one of many national strategies to position Singapore as a significant node on the global stage. The Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) is a ground-up initiative that also looks to Southeast Asia and beyond as its stage. In this conversation, SIFA Festival Director Natalie Hennedige and SIPF co-founder Gwen Lee share their takes on the impact of festivals on art-making, the creation and sustainability of a festival’s community, and the push and pull between staying artistically relevant and maintaining a strong connection with audiences. Join them to learn more about the stories these festival-makers are trying to tell in today’s world.
